I’ve christened May the How To Sell Self-Published Books Month here on Catherine, Caffeinated, but before we get into the nuts and bolts of marketing and promoting your book, we need to have a little tough love session first.

At my most recent workshop I started off by saying to the participants that my aim for the day was to send them home with everything I wished I’d known before I started self-publishing, or in other words everything I had to learn on the job because when I started self-publishing, I didn’t have a clue. And yet clueless and all that I was, I was operating with a huge advantage: realism. This looks delicious!

The Scrumptious Pumpkin

I could eat this pasta every day of the week.  It’s so simple but such a delicious combination of flavors with the sweetness of the squash, the crisp kale, the hint of thyme and white wine, and the salty, cheesy Parmesan.

I try to make one meatless meal a week – eating a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables and low in processed and red meats is proven to help you maintain a healthy weight and lower your risk of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes.  The meat industry generates vast amounts of greenhouse gas emissions, so it’s also good for the environment to try to cut out some of the meat from your weekly diet.  But I always worry whether my husband Chris (a major meat-and-potatoes lover) will like any of my new vegetarian meal creations.  This is one he loves.  And the protein from the cheese and whole wheat pasta –…

Life and Laughter

I spend a LOT of time writing. Whether it’s my Life and Laughter column, an article for a magazine or newspaper, a press release or this witty blog, I’m ALWAYS trying to come up with interesting topics, fun words, brilliant sentences, blah, blah, blah. But there are SOME days (I call them “weekdays”) when my brain doesn’t engage and I stare stupidly at my computer screen, watching that irritating cursor blink in my general direction. Mocking me.

Writer’s Block.  For some reason, the voices in my head have gone silent.

So I type anything. Lalalalalalalalalalalalala. UMMMMMMMMMMMMM. Peri is cool. I want chocolate. Must quit my writing job. Goats are people, too. This grapefruit is fascinating. Etc, etc, etc.  Blah, blah, blah.

Doesn’t usually help.

But I’ve found some things that will get those creative writing juices flowing again:

Oh my goodness, this is such a wonderful and creative idea! 🙂

Hello!!! I know it’s been forever and I’m sorry but I’m back and I’m just full of inspiration – thanks to the fabulous E-course I’m taking by Jeanne Oliver.  My first trimester was trying at times, tired, nauseous, weepy but now that I’m well into my second trimester I’m feeling like myself again. While my cravings for chocolate have yet to subside, a forceful urge to create art has emerged, so when I found this course via the Dreamy Whites blog I signed up immediately! Jeanne has always inspired me with her whimsical creations and beautiful art, so what better teacher to help me break out of my creative rut?!

Our first project was to assemble a vintage art journal. A place where we can sketch, doodle, paint and dream. I couldn’t wait to begin. Here is the final result…
